(Kenneth Anderson) Althouse notes the following , in a discussion of Megan McArdle criticizing a book while only half-way through it: A rule against criticizing books you haven’t finished would overprotect authors, since you  shouldn’t finish a bad book, and it would also  underprotect authors, since the critics wouldn’t disclose that they hadn’t read the whole thing. I think Althouse is right; she goes on to talk about the difference...

(Ilya Somin) John McWhorter has a good column at Root urging African-Americans to make a priority of opposing the War on Drugs {[HT: my fiancee’s blog ]: The Reclaim the Dream March “recaptured the flavor” of the March on Washington. But it isn’t an accident that this brings to mind popping an old piece of gum from the underside of a desk into your mouth to see how much “flavor” might still be left in it. The 1963 March on Washington,...

The Am Law MidLevel survey, released earlier this week , revealed what many already knew: the people who were able to hang onto their jobs during the recession are really unhappy. Times are tough for the survivors, and today we have more evidence. An employee in the Dallas office of Sedgwick sent an open letter to the office managing partner, Alan Vickery , and others in management. The letter expresses massive disappointment with what has happened...

Last week, the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) held its annual meeting at the ARIA resort in Las Vegas. I attended ILTA’s annual conference in 2009, but unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict that I call “work,” I was unable to make it this year. Ironically, in looking at all the write-ups in various blog posts and news articles, I was surprised at how much information there was on this year’s conference. Although...

(Ilya Somin) Others have pointed out various flaws in Jane Mayer’s New Yorker article attacking Charles and David Koch for their donations to various libertarian causes. But I think it would be helpful to outline her three biggest errors in one place: the false claim that the Kochs’ funding of libertarian organizations is somehow secret; the assertion that it it is part of a “pro-corporate agenda”; and the argument that the Kochs’ donations...

(Eugene Volokh) I assume most law review staffers are already doing this, but in case you aren’t, let me suggest it: Many old legal books are available in full text on Google Books, and many more available in HeinOnline’s Legal Classics database and Gale’s Making of Modern Law database. (My sense is that most law schools have HeinOnline and Gale subscriptions.) And since all these services show you photographic images of the book pages, you...
